How Drive Thrus Break Walkability
Drive thrus provide a lot of convenience for people in cars, but they aren't good for cities.
This video is more or less a redo of an older drive thrus video I made. I never felt satisfied with my original video on the topic, and I figured I could do the subject more justice on a second attempt. Here's a link to the old version for anyone who is curious: ruclips.net/video/v1SZWytHGf8/видео.html

Also another point these lanes is that they're ALWAYS full of gravel which might be ok for bikes but scooters, electric boards or anything with smaller or harder wheels simply can't use them.

Thats why I left after 35 years. City council cares about the riverwalk and the casinos only. They had focused on tourism for so long, they forgot about tue locals. Then you got the tweekers, drunks and constant sirens. It was too much for my nerves. They still haven't addressed the Truckee River floods that happen regularly and have neen happened since the 1950s when the water came all the way to the arch. (The train trench is fairly new, and still they neglected to add water diversion methods). Now that the age of gambling is over for Nevada, places like the Reno/Sparks area will continue to decline, and now especially since the reckless philosophy of Californian lifestyle has infested the area... It will see its end as a welcoming and growing city. Heck, even Harrahs got out. Thats saying a lot, considering how much Harrahs invested in Washoe county. Keep voting in Liberals, Reno! Good luck!

I was so disappointed in Starfield. I love sci-fi, I loved Fallout 3, I loved Oblivion, so like. It should've been an easy home run for me. I can literally only remember one thing from that game. I encountered someone upon jumping into a random system who was singing over the comms. That single memory was such a perfect moment, but the rest od the game was just so bland.

Here's the thing: when they say they have the most hand crafted content in a Bethesda game ever, I can believe them. But it also has, by far, the most empty meaningless garbage. Think of it as a soup; it's not the number, or even quality of the ingredients that matters, it's the _ratio._ If you make Starfield Soup with twice the meat and veggies as Skyrim Soup, but _one hundred times_ the water, guess what? Your soup is going to taste like water, Bethesda! And while they might occasionally get a spoonful of meat they really like, most of their bites are just going to be water, and water is all they're going to remember. That's what Starfield is; Water Soup.

I'm glad I live in a town where their are many pathways that don't go near any proper roads. Kids can ride their bikes without them or their parents worry about being mowed down by a speeding car. You can go just about anywhere without using ANY of the roads. Other towns would benefit from being that way too.

I .. honestly don't get the allure of eating in your car. No place to wash your hands, your car gets dirty, you can´t really drive and eat anyway, you are waiting anyway, so might as well get out and stretch your legs even if you have no time and get a to-go order. The second part - too much parking - could be, in many places - fixed easily. Instead of each business fiercely defending their spaces, and you drive 100 feet from Safeway to the UPS store, pool the parking. And of course, permit-wise, adjust for the type of business. A bodega needs more than a barber-shop for the same area - how many people's hair can the barber cut at the same time ?

It’s kinda wild how this is banned everywhere when like, those sorts of things are part of why I love living in Minneapolis (though the zoning got stricter and a bunch of that is grandfathered in here too because of course, but it’s still everywhere within city limits)

Pedestrian islands are fine. It's large-radius turns that are the problem. An island is helpful if you're trying to cross four lanes of traffic on foot, as long as the physical structure of the intersection makes drivers stop at a sharp corner when turning instead of zooming around a bend. For that matter, large-radius turns on _roads_ are fine too. Stroads are the problem. But people do have reason to travel more than a few blocks within urban areas. We need some sort of intra-urban roads or through streets. My preferred format is what's sometimes called a "boulevard": a road with a street on each side. The road in the middle can function as a road, because there aren't people trying to turn on and off, or pull over and park, or leave a parking space and merge into traffic. They do all of the local-access stuff from the street on each side. Slow traffic is physically separated from through traffic.

One thing I cannot stand about these places is the food curfew where only the drive-thru is open. Like only people in cars deserve to eat after 9/10pm. I get that drive-thrus are convenient and sometimes I just wanna shave time, but I do prefer to park and just go in. The only time saved is the walking to and from the car. Might as well just be a drive-in. At least Rally's have walk-up windows. Maybe we should bring back drive-ins and slow down America some.

Honestly car manufacturers should have to provide everyone with a free car because we all pay taxes for the roads yet only people who can afford cars are able to use them. In other words, without road taxes, car manufacturers would not be able to sell their products. Seems like a giveaway to them.

You’ve managed to perfectly describe Australian culture. I live in Brisbane and there are hundreds of coffee shops and cafes dotted around the suburbs in old converted houses. We incorporated the village lifestyle of the UK with every suburb having its own small commercial zone for your local butcher, baker, hairdresser etc. and the cafe culture of the more recent post WWII Greek and Italian immigrants to create an idyllic society.

We also have some that go in the ground floor of blocks of flats which is quite impressive and probably using some of the generaly excessive post war flats ground/basement parking facilities but still feels rather silly.
